Contexte
A software defined radio (SDR) is a radio frequency (RF) transceiver where most of the signal acquisition and processing units are done in the digital domain with a software approach. This type of architecture, in opposition to classic RF transceivers offers better flexility as it can cope with various bandwidth, carrier frequencies and signal processing units. Since the past few years, the area of SDR has gain a strong interest with the growing capacity of software means and the increasing needs of flexible, versatile and reconfigurable systems. SDR are now appealing for cellular network deployment (cloud radio access network (CRAN)) where most of the processing is done on the cloud and where the device serves as remote radio head.

Granit team of IRISA aims to study energy efficiency of wireless communication systems. In the past few years, GRANIT has successfully conducted academic and industrial projects in which SDR has been used for passive signal identification (TEMPEST scenario) and for active high quality audio transceiver (binaural sound). In these projets, Granit team has taken care of the methodology that can leverage hardware and software ressources of the SDR.
Mission

The engineer will be part of the research engineer team of GRANIT and CAIRN team of IRISA laboratory in Lannion. The purpose is to build a SDR demonstrator that uses a CRAN architecture based on Open Air Interface (OAI). This demonstrator will be based on X310 SDR (from Ettus Research) with a pure software stack. In a second step, some processing blocks will be moved to the hardware part of the SDR (i.e the FPGA). A study on the methodology used will be performed and the obtained performance (throughput and latency) will be assessed.
