Diane Dewez (Inria), PHD student Hybrid/Mimetic research team

@DianeDewez

Diane: I'm 25 years old, I'm in my 2nd year of thesis in the Hybrid and Mimetic research teams. Prior to my thesis, I graduated as a computer engineer at the INSA of Rennes. After an internship, I decided to continue with my thesis because I am passionate about the field of virtual reality and I wanted to deepen my knowledge in this field for 3 years.

180 seconds to say what? I'm going to present what my thesis work consists of. I study the avatar in virtual reality, i.e. the virtual body that replaces our real body. The interest of the community is currently very focused on the incarnation (taking over the avatar's body), I focus mainly on this incarnation during interaction tasks. My long term goal is to improve the avatars for interaction tasks, so that we accept this new body but especially so that we can use it to perform tasks.

I'm not only a PhD Student... .I do some sports (badminton, weight training, climbing). I listen to a lot of music, I go to a lot of concerts and I'm learning to play some bass. I also love psychology, and my thesis allows me to do a little bit of it because virtual reality is very related to the cognitive sciences.

What I will do, if I win? I don't know yet, my goal being already to do my best for the qualifications phase

Rémi Hutin (ENS Rennes), PHD student CELTIQUE research team

@RemsHutin

Rémi: I am 24 years old, I grew up in Cergy, in the Val-d'Oise. After a preparatory course in Paris, I continued my studies in computer science at the ENS Rennes from 2015. I am now in my thesis in the CELTICS research team since 1 year and a half. My supervisors are Sandrine Blazy and David Pichardie.

180 seconds to say what? The title of my presentation is: "Compilation and preservation of security properties". I am interested in so-called hidden channel attacks, which exploit, for example, the measurement of a program's execution time to discover secret information. Cryptographic implementations are very vulnerable to such attacks, but there are methods to protect against them, and it is the notion of security that I am interested in.  The goal of my thesis is then to vérifier formally that these security properties are preserved during the compilation of programs.

I'm not only a PhD Student... I am also a musician, I have studied violin for more than 10 years, which I still practice as an amateur. And I have recently taken up the piano!

What I will do, if I win? Good question, I don't really know. I can't really imagine myself winning, but I'll already be very happy to spend the stage of qualifications in Rennes!

Raphaël Truffet (UR1), PHD student EMPENN research team

@RaphaelTruffet

Raphaël: I come from Burgundy (Chalon sur Saône), I did a preparatory course in Lyon before arriving in Rennes in 2015 to study at the ENS in Rennes in computer science. I joined the EMPENN team in 2018 to prepare a thesis entitled "Acquisition and reconstruction of brain white matter microstructure parameters under parsimony constraints", supervised by Emmanuel Caruyer and Christian Barillot.

180 seconds to say what? to explain my research work on the MRI of diffusion which allows to detect the movements of water molecules at the microscopic scale whereas the resolution of MRI is of the order of a millimeter. This allows to have information on the microstructure, in particular on the white matter, that is to say everything that is "wired" in the brain.

I'm not only a PhD Student...  I've been doing theater since high school and continue to do it today on différentes forms: musical comedy of the ENS, amateur troupe, videos and short films that feed my youtube channel. It is for these reasons that the MT180 contest attracted me: to combine my passion for the stage and what I do on a daily basis (my thesis).

What I will do, if I win? I am already quite invested in popularization, but if I ever win, it is sure that I will invest even more in mediation scientifique.
