Congratulations to Leo Ackermann, an Inria PhD student in the Genscale research team, who won the Best Poster Award at RECOMB 2026, the 30th annual international conference on Research in Computational Molecular Biology, held in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 26 to 29 May 2026.

Leo presenting his posterThis award recognises the poster entitled “Subquadratic storage of pairwise distance matrices of large microbial collections” by Leo Ackermann, Pierre Peterlongo and Karel Brinda

This work addresses a major challenge in modern microbial genomics: the efficient storage and analysis of distances between genomes in very large microbial collections. These methods are increasingly important for pathogen surveillance, comparative genomics and large-scale genomic analyses focused on public health.

RECOMB is one of the two leading international conferences in computational biology, alongside ISMB.
To our knowledge, in its 30-year history, researchers based in France have very rarely been recognised, and this may well be the first award for work carried out by a research team based in France.

Congratulations to Leo Ackermann and his supervisors on this award.
