Titre : Toward Autonomous Test Agent

Abstract : Although automated testing has advanced considerably, manual testing is still widely used due to the frequent breakdown of test scripts, which require extensive maintenance when an application’s structure changes, even slightly. Recent progress in Large Language Models (LLMs) offers new opportunities by enabling Autonomous Web Agents (AWAs) to interact with applications more flexibly. These agents can function as Autonomous Test Agents (ATAs), potentially reducing the dependency on fragile automated scripts by using natural language instructions similar to those of human testers. In this talk, I will present an ongoing study evaluating the effectiveness of ATAs and discuss their current strengths and limitations.

Bio : Xavier Blanc is a professor at the University of Bordeaux and currently serves as the director of the Laboratoire Bordelais de Recherche en Informatique (LaBRI). He earned his Ph.D. from Paris 6 University in 2001, focusing on software modeling for Electricité de France (EDF). Following his doctoral studies, he worked as a software architect at Softeam before returning to academia as an associate professor at Paris 6 University in 2002, where he specialized in model-driven engineering. In 2009, he obtained his Habilitation to Direct Research in Computer Science from the same institution.

In 2010, Xavier Blanc joined the University of Bordeaux as a full professor. He served as the deputy director of LaBRI from 2011 to 2014 and led the ProgResS research group from 2014 to 2021. His research interests include software development and evolution, with a focus on repository mining and static analysis. He has supervised over ten Ph.D. students and has contributed to more than 60 publications in international journals and conferences. Notably, in 2024, he, along with colleagues Jean-Rémy Falleri and Floréal Morandat, received the "Most Influential Paper" award at the Automated Software Engineering conference for their work on "Fine-grained and accurate source code differencing."

Beyond his academic roles, Professor Blanc co-founded ProMyze, a company specializing in software engineering tools, and was an honorary member of the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF) from 2015 to 2020.
