Ontologies for Data Access and Data Quality

The main goal of this talk is to provide a gentle introduction to ontology-based mediated query answering, a promising approach to data access and integration that has been extensively studied by the knowledge representation & reasoning and database communities. In a nutshell, the idea is to use ontologies to enrich and unify the vocabulary of data sources, thereby making it easier for users to formulate their queries, as  well as to specify domain knowledge, which can be exploited by reasoning algorithms to infer implicit information and return more complete results. Towards the end of the talk, I will consider ontologies in the context of data quality and provide a quick glimpse at some recent and ongoing work on handling inconsistent data.
