Research areas

My research is focused on turbulent shear flows by tackling crucial topics of measurements techniques, analysis and modeling of environmental and industrial flows in presence of non-canonical influences. This concerns the study of mixing layer/wake interaction, wake flow with spanwise non uniformity, mixing layer under the influence of thermal gradients and mixing layer developing between non-uniform flows.

The analysis and modeling of these flows has required the design of efficient new measurement techniques like hot-wire anemometry for the simultaneous measurement of velocity and temperature with a single hot-wire probe, but also image- and model-based measurements techniques arising from computer vision.

Currently my research is mostly focused on developing and analyzing efficient optical flow methods for 2D and 3D spatiotemporal vector fields reconstruction from image sequences of turbulent flows. Key challenges are the development of observation and regularization models based on the physics of fluids, and the combination of image sequences with numerical simulation of dynamical laws.

Keywords: fluid dynamics, turbulence, shear flow, hot-wire anemometry, optical-flow, variational approaches, data assimilation
