Abstract: Astrolog is a highly modular, portable, light-weight and cost-effective management system meant for the management of Astrolab which is our local distributed system comprising of heterogeneous machines running varied operating systems connected by an ATM LAN. The manager is capable of executing either on a static machine or on a portable computer. This paper outlines Astrolog's contributions in the area of distributed system management. Astrolog introduces a unique dynamically variant hierarchial management architecture. Astrolog also introduces the unique concept of a mobile network manager which incorporates the mobile agent technology. Astrolog is also an integrated management environment and it provides the facility of network, as well as system management.
