Research & innovation in computer science and information technology

IRISA - Institut de Recherche en Informatique et Systèmes Aléatoires - is today the largest French research laboratory (850+ people) in the field of computer science and information technology. The lab covers all the themes within these fields, from computer and network architecture to artificial intelligence, going through, e.g., software engineering, distributed systems and virtual reality.

Focused on the future of computer science at large with internationally recognized expertise, IRISA is present in 3 geographical sites in Brittany (Rennes, Lannion, Vannes), at the heart of a rich regional research and innovation ecosystem.

To remain at the forefront of the evolution of computer science and information technology while accompanying the digital transition of society and other scientific disciplines, the laboratory is structured into seven scientific departments along with seven transversal axes addressing societal issues such as cybersecurity, health, environment and ecology, transport, robotics, energy, culture.

IRISA results from a desire of collaboration between eight institutions, in alphabetical order CentraleSupélec, CNRS, ENS Rennes, IMT Atlantique, Inria, INSA, Rennes, Université Bretagne Sud, Université de Rennes 1. A multidisciplinary approach gives rise to a force of women and men who give their best for fundamental and applied research, training, exchanges with other disciplines, scientific mediation, know-how and technology transfer.

IRISA, the partner for all your projects....

IRISA scientists

Our team of scientists, specialising in IT research and automation and signal processing, all come from internationally renowned higher education institutions in France and abroad.

IRISA teacher-researchers and researchers provide training at Université Rennes 1 (ISTICEnssatESIR, Tech Colleges), the Université de Bretagne Sud (UFR informatique, ENSISB, Tech Colleges), INSA Rennes (IT Department), Télécom Bretagne, and Supelec, amongst others.

IRISA is a research centre that plays an active role in the local economy Images & réseaux competition cluster, Biogenouest network, B-Com Institute of Technological Research, CominLabs Excellence laboratory), and is involved in a large number of projects funded by the ANR.
But IRISA is also expanding the scope of its scientific work to international dimensions, with a number or European contracts and scientific partnerships with numerous international laboratories.

IRISA international collaborations

Our technological experimentation facilities are used by research bodies in flagship fields such as bioinformatics, medical imaging, biomedical, and robotics.

The results of our research form the basis of many partnerships with stakeholders in industry: major partnerships are in place with major groups and SME, and IRISA has given birth to several start-ups.
