We are pleased to receive Barry Porter from Lancaster University (UK). He will give a talk on Tuesday, July 4 at 11:00 in room Lipari (F202, orange level).

Title:
Emergent software systems

Abstract:
Modern software systems are increasingly complex, demanding high levels of human involvement in the fine details of their design, development, maintenance and configuration. This talk will introduce the recent paradigm of runtime emergent software systems, which learn how to self-assemble from small building blocks to best achieve a given task. Emergent systems are in a continuous and autonomous state of learning, making constant observations about their current deployment environment and their own behaviour characteristics in that environment, while searching for improved ways to self-assemble using alternative compositions of building blocks. This talk will present the new software technology that makes this possible; the kinds of machine learning challenges that it entails; and our recent research results in emergent data centre systems, some of which have gained international media coverage.
