Oriented Wavelet-based Image Codec

This still image codec is based on oriented wavelet transforms developed in the team. The transform is based on wavelet lifting locally oriented according to multiresolution image geometry information. The lifting steps of a 1D wavelet are applied along a discrete set of local orientations defined on a quincunx sampling grid. To maximize energy compaction, the orientation minimizing the prediction error is chosen adaptively. This image codec outperforms JPEG-2000 for lossy compression. This software has been registered at the APP under the number IDDN.FR.001.260024.000.S.P.2008.000.21000.

Distributed video codec

A distributed video coding software has been developed within the DISCOVER European research project (http://www.discoverdvc.org/) with contributions of the TEMICS project-team. In particular, the TEMICS project-team has contributed to the following modules: side information extraction with the mesh-based and hybrid block/mesh based motion estimation techniques, Rate control, Optimal MMSE reconstruction at the decoder, and on the exploitation of the source memory with a distributed DPCM solution. The DISCOVER codec is one of the most efficient distributed video coding solutions nowadays. Its executable files can be downloaded from http://www.discoverdvc.org/.

This tooltox contains three syndrome-based DSC codecs based on three channel codes: Convolutional, Turbo, and Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC). The encoders compress a binary sequence into its syndrome. The decoders find an estimate of the binary sequence from the knowledge of its syndrome and some correlated side-information. Three types of binary sources are supported by the codecs: uniform sources, non-uniform sources, and Gilbert-Elliott (GE) sources. The software generates Bit Error Rate (BER) versus conditional entropy curves, and the estimated parameters (for non-uniform and GE sources).

ITADCodec

This software consists of a new image compression codec based on the overcomplete dictionary training toolbox above described. The codec outperforms JPEG 2000 for the class of facial images. Codec construction routines build the coefficient quantizers and corresponding Huffman tables. The run-time routine carries out bit allocation across the image under a rate-distortion criterion. Routines are also included to test the codec using objective rate vs. PSNR measures as well as subjective (visual) measures.

ITD Toolbox

This is an overcomplete dictionary training toolbox (Matlab implementation). This toolbox implements a new overcomplete trained dictionary scheme developed in the team that produces state-of-the art results in applications including image denoising and compression. The toolbox includes training algorithms for three different realizations of the new dictionary as well as routines to visually inspect dictionary atoms and to carry out signal decomposition/reconstruction.

LDI Builder

This software constructs a Layered Depth Image (LDI) representation of un-rectified Multi-View + Depth (MVD) sequences. The Incremental construction scheme reduces inter-layer correlation. The generated I-LDI is compatible with the M3DPlayer, permitting 3D visualisation and free viewpoint rendering of the 3D scene. The software also implements a virtual-view rendering technique which significantly reduces ghosting artefacts by eliminating untrusted texture boundaries detected in depth maps, as well as cracking artefacts thanks to an epipolar geometry aided inpainting method.

The codecs are based on a 2D predictive algorithm (HOP : Hierarchical Oriented Prediction), a 2D adaptive directional wavelet transform, and a 3D adaptive wavelet decomposition.

M3DGIS

The software M3DGIS registers unconstrained videos of urban environments to GIS-based rough untextured 3D models of buildings. The initial link between the images and the 3D models is set by acquiring GPS positions simultaneously to videos. The registration itself consists in the estimation of the camera position and orientation towards the buildings 3D models. M3DGIS also lets the user exploit the registration to compute textures of the viewed building façades using image data extracted from the videos. Such textures are thus computed from ground imagery, and as such provide much more visual quality than aerial based imagery. The registration phase itself is split in two successive steps. First, a supervised process allows to register accurately the first image of the video to the 3D models. Here, supervised means that the software computes the solution automatically, but asks for a confirmation from the user. The second step is fully automatic and consists in determining the camera pose for all the remaining images, through a camera pose tracking process exploiting the solutions found for the previous images of the video. Texture computation is a fully automatic process. From the registration information, for each visible building façade in the video, the corresponding image data are extracted and rectified from each image in which the façade is visible. Then all the rectified façade images are combined to provide a final texture, which can be applied to the 3D model for realistic virtual tours for instance.

M3DPlayer

This software supports rendering of a 3D scene and navigation within the scene. A first version of the player is registered at the APP under the number IDDN.FR.001.090023.000.S.P.2008.000.21000. A lite version has been registered under the number IDDN.FR.001.110032.000.S.P.2010.000.31235. It integrates as a plug-in the 3D model-based video codec of the team. The codec allows automatic construction of a representation of a video as a stream of textured 3D models, which enables very low bit rate compression (16 to 256 kb/s in 25Hz CIF format) with a satisfactory visual quality. It also supports scalable coding of both geometry and texture information.

This software estimates depth maps from multi-view videos, to provide Multi-View plus Depth (MVD) videos. MVD videos can be used to synthesize virtual views of the scene, or to render a different number of views than captured in the original video, for instance on an auto-stereoscopic display. This software produces depth maps of higher quality than those generated by the Depth Estimation Reference Software from the MPEG-3DV group, in terms of virtual views synthesis quality. MVD2PolygonSoup

This software computes a polygon-based representation of multi-view plus depth (MVD) video sequences. The software produces quad-trees for the different views with depth information associated to each quad corner. Each quad-tree is a decomposition of a depth map into quadrilaterals. The quad-trees are pruned depending on the inter-view redundancies and quad reliability. The whole set of quads coming from every quad-tree forms a 3D polygon soup. Since every quad contains depth information, they can be back-projected into 3D, enabling virtual view synthesis.

PICS: Inter Layer Predictors for Scalable Coding. This library contains a set of tools for inter-layer prediction in a scalable video codec. In particular, it contains a tool for improved spatial prediction of the higher resolution layers based on the lower resolution layer. It also contains tools for orthogonal transforms of the enhancement layers, which were derived from the Laplacian pyramid structure in the scalable video codec. This software computes new scores for Tardos fingerprinting code considering the strategy used to create the pirated copy. It takes in input a matrix x containing the code words (a word per user), the word extracted from the pirated copy y, the sequence p of probabilities used to design the code words, and the strategy used to create the pirated copy s. s is a vector of size c+1, (c is the number of pirates) indicating the probabilities to have a '1' if the pirates have k '1' , k in {0,...,c}. The output is a vector containing the scores of the users. TraitorTracing is a Matlab implementation.

VLCLib

This library contains a set of robust decoding tools for variable length codes (VLC) and for quasi-arithmetic codes. It contains tools for soft decoding with reduced complexity with aggregated state models for both types of codes. It also includes soft decoding tools of punctured quasi-arithmetic codes with side information used for Slepian-Wolf coding of correlated sources. This software requires the Libit library and the GMP (GNU Multiple Precision) library.

Watermarking platform

This software integrates as plug-ins a set of functions (watermark detection, robust watermark embedding and extraction), for different applications (fingerprinting and copyright protection). These plug-ins include the Broken Arrows software and the Chimark2 software. The Broken Arrows software has been developed in collaboration with the CNRS-Gipsa-lab in Grenoble, in the context of the international challenge BOWS-2 (Break Our Watermarking System - 2nd Edition). The source code has been registered at the Agency for the Protection of Programmes (APP) under the number IDDN.FR.001.170012.000.S.P.2008.000.41100. The software is available as an open-source code distributed under the INRIA-CNRS license CECILL (see URL: bows2.gipsa-lag.inpg.fr). The Chimark2 software is a robust image watermarking tool developed earlier in the team. The platform supports different types of attacks (collusion, compression, crop, de-synchronization, ...) and at demonstrating the performance of the watermarking tools in presence of these attacks.

WSVC

WSVC is a wavelet based video codec based on a motion compensated t+2D wavelet analysis. It isabout to be registered at the Agency for the Protection of Programmes (APP). The codec supports three forms of scalability: temporal via motion-compensated temporal wavelet transforms, spatial scalability enabled by a spatial wavelet transform and SNR scalability enabled by a bit-plane encoding technique. A so-called /extractor/ allows the extraction of a portion of the bitstream to suit a particular receiver temporal and spatial resolution or the network bandwidth. This codec has been provided to Alcatel-Lucent and will be used in the just starting ANR-ARSSO project.
