Deployment of a Grid distributed operating system on top of IaaS clouds

Place of work: Centre de recherche INRIA Rennes – Bretagne Atlantique (France) on Nantes site
http://www.inria.fr

Teams: Ascola project-team (http://www.emn.fr/z-info/ascola/doku.php) on Nantes site and Myriads  research team (http://www.irisa.fr/myriads) on  Rennes site.

Duration: Fixed term contract – 6 months

Starting date: As soon as possible (2011)

Overview: In the framework of the EIT ICT Labs, the ASCOLA and Myriads research teams are interested in resource management in large-scale computing infrastructures and in the deployment of distributed applications and systems in grids and clouds. As part of the XtreemOS European project (June 2006-September 2010) scientific coordination provided by INRIA, we designed and implemented a new distributed operating system: XtreemOS (http://www.xtreemos.eu). Available as open source under GPL / BSD, XtreemOS system offers native support for virtual organizations and facilitates access to resources in a grid. It has been designed for large dynamic grids.

IaaS clouds like OpenNebula (http://opennebula.org) and Nimbus (http://www.nimbusproject.org/) allow efficient resource management in large scale computing infrastructures. Thanks to the deployment of virtual machines, IaaS clouds bring flexibility and  ease of deployment for distributed systems and applications.

The recruited engineer will implement tools to automatically deploy OpenNebula and Nimbus clouds on one or several sites on the Grid’5000 experimentation platform (http://www.grid5000.fr). He/She will also implement tools for the automatic deployment of the XtreemOS Grid distributed operating system on top of OpenNebula and Nimbus clouds deployed over Grid’5000 sites. Scalability, genericity, and the automation degree are fundamental properties to achieve in the developed tools. These tools will be made available to the scientific community in open source/ The recruited engineer will provide support to users. He/She will write technical documentation, tutorials and user manuals for all developed tools and will create and maintain a website devoted to this set of tools. Moreover, he/she will be in charge of the writing of the contract deliverables
