Supporting Multimedia in Open Distributed Processing

Heterogeneity is arguably the most important problem facing the developers of distributed systems today. Consequently, there has been considerable interest in the field of open distributed processing, and a number of standards and platforms are now available including the ISO Reference Model for Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP) and OMG's Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA). It is crucially important however that such initiatives remain responsive to new end user demands and the emergence of new technology. The major challenge at the present is the need to support multimedia in open distributed processing environments.

This seminar will address the problem of supporting multimedia applications and services in open distributed processing standards and platforms. The solutions presented are biased towards RM-ODP, although it will be argued that the approach could also be adopted within a CORBA framework. The seminar will discuss an extended programming model with explicit support for multimedia (cf computational viewpoint in RM-ODP). The seminar will then discuss an associated engineering model and a technology solution based on the Chorus microkernel. Finally, the seminar will speculate on future directions in open distributed processing, particularly with regard to supporting multimedia in mobile environments. In particular, the concept of a reflective middleware platform will be briefly introduced.
