General organisation of the joint research unit (UMR)

IRISA (the Institute for Research in Computer Science and Random Systems) is a joint research unit (UMR) which brings together, in a single laboratory, staff and equipment from 4 partner institutions: CNRS, University of Rennes 1, INSA, and ENS.Cachan.

The agreements

IRISA is a partner laboratory of the INRIA Rennes–Bretagne Atlantique research centre. The framework scientific partnership agreements were signed on 24 October 2008 by University of Rennes 1, INSA and ENS Cachan.
A coordination committee composed of representatives from the partner institutions draws up and approves the UMR Convention every four years when the time comes to sign a new contract. This convention stipulates the conditions of the partnership and the details of the different bodies involved.

The bodies involved

IRISA comprises the following bodies:

The Laboratory MANAGEMENT
After the coordination committee and the laboratory board have given their opinion, the Director and Assistant Director are appointed jointly by the partner institutions. The management decides how all the resources made available to the laboratory by the partners will be used.

The Laboratory BOARD
The board has an advisory role and may be asked to issue an opinion on any matter relating to scientific policy, management of resources or the organisation and operation of the unit.

The SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT
Made up of the Scientific Directors of the departments (see below), the scientific management is consulted about the unit’s scientific policy and operations.

The Scientific Guidance COMMITTEE
Consulted about the unit’s future scientific activities, this committee looks in depth at the laboratory’s research topics.
