Some dates to remember

In 1970, academics laid the foundations for IRISA with the creation of a software laboratory in the University of Rennes 1’s Mathematics and Computer Science training and research unit and a three-year course in Computer Science run jointly by the university and INSA Rennes. At that time, research focussed on the design of operating systems using highly developed programming models.

In 1980, IRIA, now INRIA, created its Rennes research centre and IRISA became a partnership between this new research centre and CNRS laboratory number 227.
IRISA expanded its horizons in 1988, launching projects based in Lannion, which have since become the Badins and Cordial projects.

In 1999, IRISA acquired a virtual reality immersion room, as well as parallel computing equipment.

Today, IRISA has around 500 personnel, most of its research teams being shared with the INRIA Rennes-Bretagne Atlantique research centre.
